Rhinoplasty - changing the shape of the nose.

The aim of rhinoplasty is to change the shape of the nose so that it suits the rest of the face. Rhinoplasty should not be performed until the patient is 16 years of age, when the nose has almost completely developed. If only the patient is in a good general condition, there are no upper age limits for changing the shape of the nose.

The change is brought about by incisions inside the nose. In some cases they may run from the bottom side of the nose, on cartilage between alae nasi.

The nose may be reduced or enlarged in size by improving its supporting structures. This is achieved by removal or addition of bone and cartilage. The skin and soft tissues assume a new shape on this framework.

If the patient has problems breathing or irregularities in the internal structure of the nose, the surgical procedure may improve the air flow through the nose. This is often combined with some changes in the external appearance of the nose.

After the surgery the patient may experience some discomfort associated with swelling and bruising. A plaster cast is placed for about 10 days. After removal of plaster the patient may apply cosmetics. Normal everyday activities are seriously affected only for a day or two, but weeks may pass until the patient is able to bend down, lift or do some physical activities. If only the patient’s job does nor require activities that may raise blood pressure, return to work is usually possible after about two weeks. Slight oedema may persist for a longer period, but in majority of cases only the patient is aware of it. The final outcome of rhinoplasty is durable and worth waiting for.
