Mammoplasty - Augmentation - increase of size.

The procedure of breast augmentation aims at increasing the size of small or underdeveloped breasts. The surgery also enables reconstruction of the former shape of the breasts if it has changes as a result of giving birth or breastfeeding.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts about 1.5 h. The incision necessary to insert implants may be placed under the breast, immediately above the skin fold, around the lower edge of the areola (dark skin surrounding the nipple) or in the armpit. A pocket is formed either underneath the breast tissue or the breast muscle. The plastic surgeon discusses the technique with the patient, taking into account her anatomical structure as well as individual expectations.

Majority of women who undergo breast augmentation use silicone implants. It is very important to choose good quality implants manufactured by renowned companies. MENTOR is one of them. The implants are selected individually as to their shape, size and material before the procedure.

After the operation the area is swollen and bruised, but this condition is resolved with time. In this period the patient should restrain from any forceful activities, especially those requiring lifting arms, for about 2 - 3 weeks. Women may return to work 1 - 2 weeks after the operation, if only it is not manual work.

There is abundant evidence supporting the long-term safety of breast implants. If the patient enters the age group in which regular mammographic examinations are recommended, implants do not have any effect on the examination schedule. However the patient should make sure that the mammography technician is experienced in examining augmented breasts; the presence of implants requires a different technique and additional x-ray pictures.
