Mammoplasty - Reduction - reducing the size of the breasts.

The procedure consists in reducing the size of the breasts in relation of the body structure of the patient.

Large, flabby breasts can make everyday, active life of a woman difficult. They may also cause back pain, deformities of the vertebral column and shoulders, skin rash and attrition sites under the breast.

The procedure, apart from bringing relief in health problems, improves the shape of the breast and nipples.

The surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia. During the procedure the excess breast and skin tissue is removed, the nipples and the areola are moved and the remaining tissue is reshaped.

The most commonly applied technique of breast reduction uses incisions which run around the areola and further down the breast vertically and around the skin fold under the breast horizontally. Other techniques are also used, which may eliminate vertical, horizontal, or both incisions. The choice of the technique depends on individual factors and surgeon's recommendations.

After the procedure the breasts are wrapped with a gauze dressing and placed in a surgical bra. The patient should wear the supporting bra for several weeks. Transient loss of sensation in the breasts and nipples may be experienced. The patient should avoid strenuous activities and lifting hands above the head for several weeks. Return to work is possible after about two weeks.
